Modesto Biagioli

Craftsmanship, Technology, Sustainability. Precious Fibres and Yarns from the Far East.

The Biagioli Modesto company in Montale, Tuscany, is an Italian excellence in the production of cashmere and noble yarns.

The Filati Biagioli Modesto company’s adventure started one hundred years ago with the desire and commitment to produce excellent quality carded yarns.

In the 1960’s, Modesto, a brilliant man with a passion for Cashmere, transformed his father’s yarn-making activity into what Filati Biagioli Modesto is today.

Feeling the need to guarantee the excellence of his products, Modesto studies the world, the countries and the lands where the best animals are raised and cashmere wools are made.

This is the beginning of his field research that leads him mostly to China and to Mongolia, where he personally selects the best fibres by coming into direct contact with the breeders with whom he creates long-standing and continuous relationships based on hard work and trust.

“The raw materials that are used for the natural yarns come from the noble fibers of cashmere. They are all accurately selected and transformed entirely in Italy in order to guarantee Made in Italy quality”

The precious coat: cashmere, the golden fiber of the textile world.

Cashmere, the golden fibre of the textile world, has unique properties.

It is obtained by combing the fleece of Hircus goats that live on the plateaux of Asia.

The best quality Cashmere is produced in the regions of the Helan Mountains, Ningxia, Chinese Mongolia and in the desert areas of the Mongolian People’s Republic.

In order to be able to survive the cold temperatures of those lands, this animal has developed a very soft and very fine undercoat underneath thicker hairs.

This undercoat, also known as Duvet, is cashmere. The Duvet acts as a veritable heat insulator, a fibre that is closely linked to the hard climatic conditions in which the animal lives. Video

Hircus Goat: gathering cashmere

In Mongolia, where the Hircus goats live, the life style and the harmony between man and nature are fundamental.

An extraordinary relationship binds these animals, that carry such preciousness on their backs, with their breeders who consequently have developed a gathering process, almost a ritual, that has been repeated every year for centuries.

The procedure starts with the shedding of the wool during the Moulting Season and continues with the gathering of the duvet by combing the goats there where the fibres are denser, more compact and softer.

The processing of this noble Fibre initially began in the Indian region of Kashmir, that gave its name to this “golden fiber”.  Later on, the processing and gathering was moved to the oriental regions of Mongolia but the original name of the product was kept.
